Too Big for God: Dr. Juanita Bynum Reveals Her Struggle with Pride and the Path to Humility

Dr. Juanita Bynum, renowned singer, author, and prophetic minister, has spent over five decades in ministry. Yet, she says the most transformative period was the last 14 years—a time she describes as being in a “black hole,” where God worked to remove pride from her life and prepare her for a second chance.

In a recent interview, Dr. Bynum opened up about how fame and recognition had led her to stagnation. “I was everywhere,” she recalls, “living off the residue of who people said I was.” She admits that somewhere along the way, she stopped growing spiritually.

Despite her success, she realized that God always leaves something unfinished within us, encouraging us to continue pursuing Him as individuals, not just as ministers.

Dr. Bynum drew inspiration from the biblical story of Nebuchadnezzar, who was humbled by God and later restored. She likens her own journey to this, saying, “When he got his mind back, he said God is the only true and living God.

Now, I’m in the servitude of the Lord—not so much into the ministry of who I am or the fame of my name.” She credits God with saving her soul and preventing her from being corrupted by the system of fame and ministry.

To help other ministers avoid the pitfalls she experienced, Dr. Bynum founded the Leadership Intensive Institute. She sees it as necessary in an era where people are quickly elevated to titles like Apostle or Prophet without understanding the depth of the calling.

“Ministry looks glamorous at first,” she explains, “but then comes the making of the preacher, the prophet, and the apostle. That’s when the assignment gets real.” Her mission is to guide others through these challenges, helping them reposition themselves before they falter.

Dr. Bynum believes that many pastors and ministers struggle with pride, especially after reaching a certain level of recognition. “When you reach a certain height, you don’t want people to know you’re undone,” she says.

This pride, she notes, is rooted in the desire for ascension without God, echoing the fall of Lucifer. She is grateful for her time in the “black hole,” as it allowed God to dig into every area of her life and reveal hidden pride.

She recounts moments when God challenged her sense of entitlement—such as not receiving the seat she felt she deserved at a church. “God would say, ‘That’s what I’m after. You think you’re important.’” Dr. Bynum learned that her true worth is found in God’s kingdom, not in earthly recognition. She now feels her soul is in divine communication with God, describing it as a life-changing experience she recommends to everyone.

Dr. Bynum’s vulnerability and openness in sharing her journey have resonated with many. Her story is one of humility, transformation, and renewed purpose. She reminds fellow ministers that their calling is to serve, not to be served. The pursuit of Jesus, she says, must be ongoing, with continual growth and intimacy with God as the foundation.

Ultimately, Dr. Bynum’s message is clear: pride can derail even the most successful ministries. True leadership and spiritual effectiveness come from humility, service, and a deep, personal relationship with God. Her testimony stands as a powerful reminder that, no matter how far we ascend, we must always remain grounded in faith and connected to the source of our calling.
