Sad news has struck the music world: Bonnie Pointer, a founding member of the legendary group The Pointer Sisters, has died at the age of 69. According to reports, Bonnie passed away on Monday, June 8th, in Los Angeles after suffering cardiac arrest.
Her sister Anita Pointer shared the heartbreaking news, saying, “Our family is devastated. On behalf of my siblings and the entire Pointer family, we ask for your prayers at this time.”
The Pointer Sisters’ journey began over fifty years ago in their hometown church in Oakland, California, where their father was a minister. Bonnie and her youngest sister, June, started singing professionally in 1969, soon recruiting their older sisters Anita and Ruth to join them.

The four sisters debuted their first album together in 1973, launching a career that would span decades and influence generations.
Bonnie Pointer was the driving force behind the group’s formation. After graduating high school, she was eager to move beyond gospel music and pursue a professional singing career.
Together with June, she began performing as a duo before convincing Anita and Ruth—who were already married with children—to join them. The Pointer Sisters quickly became known for their unique blend of funk, soul, jazz, and pop, often performing in retro outfits reminiscent of the Andrews Sisters.
Before releasing their self-titled debut album in 1973, the group worked as backup singers for artists like Taj Mahal, Boz Scaggs, and Elvin Bishop. Their breakout hit, “Yes We Can Can,” was a funky anthem calling for unity and tolerance.
The group’s second album, “That’s a Plenty,” showcased their diverse musical influences, ranging from jazz and gospel to country. Bonnie and Anita co-wrote “Fairytale,” a song about a crumbling relationship, which earned The Pointer Sisters a groundbreaking performance at the Grand Ole Opry—the first for an African American group—and won them their first Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Group.

In 1977, Bonnie left The Pointer Sisters to pursue a solo career, signing with Motown Records. Her sisters were devastated, fearing the group wouldn’t survive without her.
Bonnie’s solo career produced a few albums, with her biggest hit being “Heaven Must Have Sent You,” a disco cover that reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1979. After three albums with Motown, she retired from studio recording and performed only occasionally.
Meanwhile, her sisters regrouped and reinvented their sound, becoming one of the biggest acts of the 1980s with hits like “He’s So Shy,” “Jump (For My Love),” and “Neutron Dance.” Bonnie’s personal life included a marriage to Motown producer Jeffrey Bowen in 1978; they separated in 2004 and divorced in 2016.
Bonnie occasionally reunited with her sisters for public appearances, such as their 1994 Hollywood Walk of Fame star and a 1996 Las Vegas show. Her mother, Sarah Pointer, once said Bonnie always wanted to make something of herself and “be somebody in this world.”
Tragically, June Pointer, the youngest sister, died in 2006. Bonnie is survived by her sisters Ruth and Anita, as well as two older brothers, Aaron and Fritz.
The passing of Bonnie Pointer marks the end of an era for The Pointer Sisters and their fans worldwide. Her talent, drive, and pioneering spirit helped shape the sound of contemporary music. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Pointer family during this difficult time.
