Tank, whose real name is Daryl Artes Babs, was once hailed as the “General of R&B” for his powerful voice and longevity in the music industry.
His career, marked by hit singles like “Maybe I Deserve,” “Please Don’t Go,” and “When We,” showcased his ability to craft timeless bedroom ballads. However, beneath the surface of his success lay a series of challenges that ultimately led to his career’s decline.

Tank’s journey began as a background singer for Ginuwine before breaking out as a solo artist in 2001. His raw, church-trained tenor earned him Grammy nominations and production credits with stars like Jamie Foxx and Aaliyah.
Despite his talent, Tank struggled with marketability. He wasn’t gimmicky enough for mainstream pop nor willing to play the industry’s political games. This honesty would later cost him not only fans but also friendships and professional opportunities.
One of the most significant blows to Tank’s career was the fallout of TGT, the R&B supergroup he formed with Tyrese and Ginuwine. TGT was supposed to be the Avengers of R&B, with each member bringing unique strengths to the table.
Their debut album, *Three Kings*, hit number one on the R&B charts in 2013, but behind the scenes, the group was plagued by dysfunction. Tank often found himself sidelined, despite being the strongest vocalist.
Tyrese demanded larger paychecks due to his Hollywood fame, while Ginuwine frequently skipped rehearsals and shows. Tank, trying to keep the group afloat, eventually walked away from a million-dollar tour due to the toxic dynamics. The group’s implosion left Tank carrying the stigma of a failed supergroup, which hurt his solo career’s momentum.
Adding to his struggles, Tank announced in 2021 that he was losing his hearing due to Meniere’s disease, a rare inner ear disorder causing hearing loss, vertigo, and balance issues. While fans rallied around him, the industry quietly began pulling away. Bookings slowed, and radio spins for his albums like *Stronger* and *Savage* dwindled. Tank’s traditional R&B style struggled to compete in an era dominated by trap beats and viral gimmicks.
Tank’s controversies also overshadowed his artistry. In a 2019 podcast interview, he made comments about double standards in sexual experimentation, sparking backlash and turning him into a social media punchline. His personal life, marked by messy breakups and child support headlines, further fueled the negative attention.
Despite these setbacks, Tank has managed to stage an impressive comeback. His 2022 album *R&B Money* and its deluxe edition in 2024 featured chart-topping singles, proving his voice still commands attention. He also debuted on Broadway in *Hell’s Kitchen* and launched the *R&B Money Podcast*, where he shares industry insights and interviews with prominent artists.

Tank’s story is one of resilience. Though he may not have reached the superstardom his talent deserved, he has earned respect as a survivor who turned silence into a legacy. His journey serves as a testament to the enduring power of authenticity and perseverance in the face of adversity.
