Akon’s $6 Billion Dream: A Fantasy That Fell Apart
Akon, the Grammy-winning artist known for hits like *“Smack That”* and *“Locked Up,”* promised to build a $6 billion futuristic city in Senegal called Akon City.
Marketed as a real-life Wakanda, this ambitious project was supposed to revolutionize Africa with cutting-edge infrastructure, solar power, and a custom cryptocurrency called Akoin. However, four years later, there’s little to show for it—no city, no progress, and a trail of broken promises.
The Grand Vision
In 2020, Akon unveiled plans for Akon City, a sprawling metropolis featuring five futuristic districts, luxury resorts, schools, hospitals, and the centerpiece Akon Tower.
He envisioned it as a beacon of African innovation powered by Akoin, a cryptocurrency he created to unite Africa under one digital economy. The media embraced the story, portraying Akon as a visionary returning to his roots to uplift the continent.
Akon secured funding, including a $1 billion line of credit from a Chinese construction firm, which he later claimed increased to $5 billion. He promised jobs, housing, and opportunities for Senegalese citizens. The project seemed unstoppable, and many believed Akon could deliver on his dream.
The Cracks Begin to Show
Despite the hype, Akon City quickly ran into problems. The land for the city was reportedly donated by Senegal’s government, but villagers displaced by the project claimed they received no compensation. Akon later admitted he had to buy the land himself, contradicting earlier claims.
Akoin, the cryptocurrency meant to power the city’s economy, launched in 2021 but failed spectacularly. It peaked at $0.58 before crashing to under $0.10, eventually disappearing from major exchanges.
Early donors who participated in a “Token of Appreciation” campaign were promised refunds if the project didn’t succeed, but many were ghosted. When confronted, Akon claimed he had no knowledge of the pending refunds, raising questions about his accountability.
The Reality of Akon City
As of 2025, Akon City is far from complete. The ambitious plans have been reduced to a single concrete block in a field, which went viral as a symbol of the project’s failure. A few small structures exist, including a recreation center and an unfinished building, but the promised tech hubs, hospitals, and skyscrapers are nowhere to be found.

The Senegalese government has issued warnings to Akon, demanding progress or threatening to cancel the deal. Meanwhile, villagers who lost their land remain uncompensated, adding to the controversy surrounding the project.
The Bigger Picture
Critics have pointed out that Akon City’s funding relied heavily on Chinese-backed loans, which could trap Senegal in debt. These deals often come with vague clauses allowing China to seize assets if countries default, raising concerns about the long-term impact of Akon’s partnership with Chinese firms.
Moreover, Akon’s branding of the city around himself—naming it Akon City, using Akoin as its currency, and planning Akon Tower—has led many to question whether the project was ever truly about empowering Africa or simply boosting his own ego.

A Legacy in Question
Akon’s dream of building a utopia has turned into a cautionary tale. While his *Lighting Africa* initiative successfully brought solar power to millions, Akon City has become synonymous with failed promises and misplaced trust.
As of now, Akon continues to promote the project, insisting it will be completed. However, with no significant progress and mounting skepticism, Akon City risks being remembered not as a revolutionary achievement but as a $6 billion fantasy that never came to life.
