Jeremy Wade Finally Reveals Why River Monsters Was Canceled—And It’s Not What Fans Think
For years, Jeremy Wade turned legends into living nightmares by pulling monstrous fish from rivers all over the world. River Monsters wasn’t just a fishing show—it was a global adventure, a mystery, and a celebration of wild places few had ever seen.
Then, suddenly, it ended. At 69, Wade has finally revealed the shocking truth behind the show’s cancellation, and it’s not what fans were told.

Before he was the world’s most famous extreme angler, Jeremy Wade spent nearly two decades teaching biology in places as far-flung as Sudan, India, and Kent, England. Teaching gave him stability, but his real passion lay beneath the surface of rivers.
Every paycheck funded expeditions to chase the stories that haunted him—tales of river monsters, whispered by local fishers and elders. Wade listened, took notes, and built a personal library of legends from Africa to South America and Asia.
His obsession came at a cost. In 2007, a bout of malaria nearly killed him during a trip. Forced to recover in isolation, Wade’s mind wandered, and the idea for River Monsters was born: a show that would reveal the dangers, mysteries, and cultures hidden in the world’s rivers. In 2009, River Monsters debuted.

The first episode plunged viewers into the Amazon Basin, where Wade hunted the giant arapaima, the Paraiba catfish, and the infamous piranha. Audiences were hooked—not just by the fish, but by the detective work, the danger, and the real science behind the myths.
River Monsters quickly became Animal Planet’s top show. Wade, once a quiet teacher, became a global star. But fame brought new pressures. Each season demanded bigger risks, more remote locations, and ever more dangerous hunts.
The Amazon was just the beginning; soon, the crew was braving the icy Himalayas, the wild Congo, and Southeast Asia’s treacherous rivers. The physical toll was immense: malaria struck again, and Wade endured brutal injuries, including a near-fatal blow from a giant fish and close encounters with electric eels and lightning strikes.
Behind the scenes, the crew faced grueling conditions—long days, extreme weather, and constant danger. Burnout spread, and familiar faces quietly left. As the show’s ambitions grew, so did the strain on everyone involved.

But the biggest challenge was yet to come. After years of uncovering new river monsters, the pool of undiscovered giants began to shrink. Many rivers, once teeming with life, grew silent. Pollution, industrialization, and collapsing ecosystems meant fewer monsters to find—and fewer stories to tell. Wade refused to fake encounters or exaggerate for the camera. He insisted on honesty, even as the network pushed for predictability and lower costs.
By 2016, Animal Planet shifted focus to safer, family-friendly shows. River Monsters became too expensive and unpredictable. Despite what fans were told—that Wade had simply run out of monsters—the real reason was more troubling. Wade later revealed that the world’s rivers were dying. Pollution and habitat destruction were wiping out the creatures and legends the show depended on.

In the end, Jeremy Wade chose integrity over ratings. Rather than recycle stories or exploit fragile environments, he ended River Monsters to protect both the animals and the truth behind their mysteries. The show’s legacy isn’t just about the monsters—it’s a warning about the rivers themselves, and the urgent need to save what remains.
