At 75, Agnetha Fältskog, the beloved voice of ABBA, has finally broken her silence about the emotional turmoil she endured during and after her marriage to Björn Ulvaeus.
Their story began as a fairytale—two young stars meeting in the Swedish music scene, falling in love, and becoming the faces of one of the world’s most iconic pop bands. But behind the dazzling hits and global fame, Agnetha’s life was marked by heartbreak, betrayal, and private suffering.
Agnetha recalls the innocence of their first meeting in 1969 and the early days of their romance, which soon transformed into a relationship overshadowed by control and emotional distance.

Even as their wedding in 1971 felt like the start of an endless song, Agnetha noticed warning signs—Björn’s charm attracted other women, and his devotion to music slowly eclipsed his commitment to her.
As ABBA rose to international stardom after their Eurovision win in 1974, Agnetha found herself trapped in a cycle of public adoration and private loneliness. The more successful they became, the greater the emotional distance between her and Björn.
She describes performing heartbreak songs written by Björn, her voice trembling with unshed tears, forced to mask her pain with a smile for the audience. Their marriage became a hollow chord—beautiful on the outside, but empty within.

The years of touring and recording intensified the strain. Agnetha juggled the roles of singer, wife, and mother, never feeling whole in any. Björn’s late nights at the studio, his silence, and the scent of unfamiliar perfume hinted at infidelity and deepened her isolation. She wrote in her journal, “Love doesn’t die from a lie. It dies from silence that lasts too long.”
By the late 1970s, their relationship was fractured beyond repair. The release of “The Winner Takes It All” in 1980, a song Björn asked Agnetha to sing, became a poignant farewell between two people too afraid to say the word “divorce.”
The recording session was filled with raw emotion; Agnetha’s tears and trembling voice captured the pain of their breakup for the world to hear.

After their divorce in 1980, Agnetha withdrew from the spotlight, raising her children and seeking solace in quiet moments by the lake. She avoided the press and lived as a recluse, trying to find peace outside the relentless noise of fame. Looking back, she realizes that “The Winner Takes It All” wasn’t just a breakup ballad—it was the story of her life, a portrait of love, loss, and survival.
Agnetha’s reflections reveal the cost of living in the public eye, the pain of performing happiness while suffering inside, and the bittersweet truth that music was both her salvation and her prison. Today, she finds comfort in memories, her children’s laughter, and the enduring legacy of ABBA’s music.
She concludes that, in love, no one truly takes it all—what remains are fragments of memory and the songs that outlive everything else. Now, at 75, Agnetha embraces the peace that comes with age, knowing that music is the one thing no one can ever take away.
