**Remember Ernest Thomas? The Reason He Disappeared Will Leave You Speechless**
Ernest Lee Thomas became an icon in American television as “Raj” on *What’s Happening!!* and later as Mr. Omar on *Everybody Hates Chris*. His warm smile and gentle humor made him beloved by millions, especially in Black households. But behind the laughter was a story of struggle, heartbreak, and quiet resilience that few fans ever knew.
Born in Gary, Indiana in 1949, Ernest grew up in a poor working-class family. He suffered from amblyopia (“lazy eye”), wore thick glasses, and was often teased.

Yet, he learned to use humor and his smile to mask pain, a skill that would later define his on-screen persona. As a child, Black faces were absent from TV, and Ernest never dreamt of acting—he planned to be a social worker.
His journey to acting began almost by accident. A friend saw his natural talent for impressions and comedy and pushed him to audition for a college play. On stage, Ernest felt seen for the first time.
He moved to New York, scraping by with odd jobs and studying at the prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He was one of the few Black students in his class, but he persevered, driven by the hardships he’d already overcome.
Broadway roles were scarce, and most casting agents wanted a “different image”—code for not Black. But Ernest persisted, landing small roles and eventually catching the eye of TV producers in Los Angeles.

In 1976, he was cast as Raj in *What’s Happening!!*, a sitcom about Black teens in LA. The show was a breakthrough, offering audiences relatable, positive Black characters instead of stereotypes. It quickly became a hit, with over 20 million viewers per episode.
Ernest’s gentle, good-natured Raj became a role model for Black youth, and he was celebrated in magazines and talk shows. But behind the scenes, the cast faced low pay and little protection.
Despite the show’s huge profits, Black actors earned far less than their white counterparts. Tensions grew, and after failed contract negotiations and behind-the-scenes drama, ABC abruptly cancelled the show in 1979—without a proper farewell.
Typecast as Raj, Hollywood no longer offered Ernest major roles. He faced isolation and rumors of addiction and poverty. During this dark period, his younger brother, who was transgender and battling AIDS, died alone. The loss devastated Ernest, leading him into depression and substance abuse. He withdrew from the spotlight, seeking solace in faith and community.

In 1985, Ernest returned as Raj in *What’s Happening Now!!*, but the show lasted only three seasons. From then on, he became a “working actor,” taking small but meaningful roles in films and TV, including *Malcolm X* and *Everybody Hates Chris*. He never chased stardom again, finding peace in faith, mentoring, and community work.
Ernest never married or had children, living a quiet, modest life devoted to helping others. He supported LGBTQ+ causes in honor of his brother and taught acting to young people. His legacy is not just as a TV pioneer, but as a survivor who faced the harsh realities of fame and racism with grace.
Today, Ernest Thomas is celebrated as an elder statesman of Black television. He appears at cultural events, inspires new generations, and remains a symbol of hope. His story reminds us that true greatness isn’t just about fame—it’s about dignity, kindness, and resilience. Ernest Lee Thomas didn’t disappear; he chose a quieter, more meaningful path, leaving behind a legacy that endures far beyond the spotlight.
