On September 22, 2023, Family Feud Studios in Atlanta buzzed with energy. Steve Harvey, America’s beloved game show host, was in his element, cracking jokes and keeping the audience laughing.

But on this episode, something happened that turned a simple game show into a national lesson on dignity, forgiveness, and humanity.

Marcus Sullivan, a 34-year-old construction worker from Alabama, stepped up to answer a question: “Name something you’d be surprised to see at a fancy dinner party.”

Instead of a silly answer, Marcus said, “A monkey in a suit,” and added, “like when they try to act civilized, but we all know what they really are.” The studio fell silent. The intent behind Marcus’s words was unmistakable—a racial insult directed at Steve Harvey, a Black man who had spent his life breaking barriers.

Steve Harvey, known for his humor and composure, didn’t laugh. He stood motionless, microphone in hand, staring at Marcus with pain and disbelief. The audience gasped, security moved toward the stage, and producers signaled to cut to commercial.

But Steve stopped them. “Don’t cut. Keep the cameras rolling,” he said quietly.

What followed was nearly a minute of silence, heavy with emotion. Steve finally spoke, sharing his experiences with racism growing up in Cleveland, Ohio. He told Marcus, “What you just said was meant to dehumanize me, to remind me that no matter how successful I become, there will always be people like you who see me as nothing more than a monkey in a suit.”

But Steve didn’t retaliate. Instead, he told Marcus, “You didn’t hurt me. You revealed yourself in front of millions.”

Steve then offered Marcus two choices: apologize to his sons for modeling hatred, or stay, play the game, and afterward have a real conversation about where his beliefs came from. Marcus’s wife and father, both emotional, urged him to choose the second option.

His father confessed to passing down racist beliefs, asking Marcus not to continue the cycle. Marcus broke down, removed his cap, and chose to learn and change.

For the next 45 minutes, Family Feud became a platform for healing. Steve shared stories from his own life—poverty, racism, perseverance. Marcus listened, asked questions, and began to understand. The Sullivan family didn’t win the game, but they gained something far more valuable.

After the show, Steve invited the Sullivans for a three-hour conversation, filmed and later released as a special called “The Healing.” In it, Marcus and his father confronted their prejudices, learning about the realities Black Americans face.

The special ended with the family visiting the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, and Marcus’s sons vowing to break the cycle of hate.

The episode ignited a national conversation. The clip went viral, and Steve Harvey Challenge trended worldwide. Families wrote letters, schools and churches screened the special, and Marcus and Steve launched a nonprofit, From Hate to Hope, to educate others about racism.

Marcus’s son started a TikTok series on unlearning racism, inspiring a youth movement called “the last generation of hate.”

Steve Harvey called it the most important moment of his career, choosing mercy and education over anger. The episode won a Peabody Award and changed lives. In a reunion years later, Marcus thanked Steve for saving his family. Steve replied, “No, you saved yourself. I just held up a mirror.”
