Tessanne Chin, the Grammy-winning Jamaican singer and champion of The Voice, has always kept her personal life private. But recently, she made a heartfelt confession that stunned fans and the music industry alike.
For years, her story was one of triumph—rising from a musical family in Kingston, Jamaica, to international stardom. Yet, behind the scenes, Tessanne faced personal struggles that almost led her to walk away from music forever.
Born into a family of musicians, Tessanne was surrounded by creativity from an early age. Her father, Richard Chin, was a drummer, and her mother, Christine, a vocalist and trumpeter.

The Chin household was a hub of musical activity, and Tessanne’s older sister, Tammy Chin, was also a rising star. Their Seventh-day Adventist faith added another layer to their upbringing, with strict Sabbath observance shaping family life and routines.
At age 12, Tessanne’s world shifted dramatically when her family moved to England. Suddenly, she found herself navigating a new culture and struggling to fit in. The experience shaped her identity, strengthening her connection to her Jamaican roots and fueling her passion for songwriting.
When she returned to Jamaica, Tessanne dove back into the music scene, joining the reggae rock band Mile High and later working as a backup singer for reggae legend Jimmy Cliff. Her solo career took off with the release of “Hideaway,” a hit single that gained traction across the Caribbean and New York.

Despite her growing success, Tessanne’s personal life was far from easy. In 2011, she married broadcaster Michael Anthony Cuff Jr., but the pressures of fame and the demands of her career strained their relationship.
By 2015, after four years of marriage, the couple quietly divorced. The heartbreak and emotional toll left Tessanne questioning her future in music. She confessed that, after her divorce, she almost gave up on her dream entirely.
Her turning point came in 2013, when reggae superstar Shaggy encouraged her to audition for The Voice. Tessanne’s blind audition wowed all four coaches, and she quickly became a fan favorite.
Her powerful performances, including renditions of Whitney Houston and Simon & Garfunkel classics, broke voting records and led her to victory—the first foreign-born winner in the show’s history. Yet, even with this success, the pressure and scrutiny were intense. Critics wondered if she could maintain her momentum, and Tessanne retreated from the spotlight to heal and rebuild.

In 2019, Tessanne found love again with Brandon Krooks, and together they welcomed two daughters, Za and Aya. Motherhood brought a new sense of purpose and joy, inspiring Tessanne to reconnect with her artistry.
She returned to music with renewed passion, releasing new singles and staging sold-out performances in Jamaica. Her family’s support—especially from her sister Tammy and her parents—helped her rediscover the joy of creating music for herself, not just for industry expectations.
Tessanne’s confession revealed the depth of her struggles and resilience. She admitted that she nearly walked away from music, but through love, family, and self-discovery, she found her way back.
Now, she creates on her own terms, balancing motherhood and her career, and inspiring fans with her story of perseverance and growth. Tessanne Chin’s journey is more than a tale of fame; it’s a powerful reminder that true success comes from overcoming adversity and staying true to oneself.
