For centuries, the Ethiopian Bible has stood apart from the Western Christian canon, containing 81 books instead of the traditional 66.
This difference is not a matter of accident or oversight—it reflects a deliberate choice by the Ethiopian Church to preserve ancient texts that were removed from other Bibles by powerful authorities in Rome.
These “forbidden” books, including the Book of Enoch, Jubilees, the Apocalypse of Peter, and others, reveal hidden truths about Jesus, angels, women leaders, and the inner kingdom that mainstream Christianity rarely discusses.

The story begins in 325 AD, when Emperor Constantine convened the Council of Nicaea to unify Christianity under a single doctrine. To achieve this, church leaders selected which texts would be included in the New Testament and which would be excluded.
Only 27 books were accepted, and dozens of other gospels, apocalypses, and apostolic letters were declared heretical and destroyed. This was not a decision driven by divine inspiration, but by political motives and a desire for control.
Ethiopia, however, was never conquered by Rome and maintained its own independent Christian tradition. While Europe burned libraries and censored “dangerous” manuscripts, Ethiopian monks painstakingly copied and preserved the complete set of sacred texts, including those rejected elsewhere.
Today, the Ethiopian Bible includes books that provide detailed prophecies, stories of powerful women, teachings about angels and demons, and mystical insights into Jesus’s message.

Among these texts, the Book of Enoch stands out. Quoted in the New Testament (Jude 14-15), Enoch describes angels descending to earth, teaching forbidden knowledge, and fathering giants known as Nephilim. It explains the origins of evil and the reason for the flood in Genesis—details left vague in the traditional Bible.
The Book of Jubilees offers a divine calendar of 364 days, challenging the Roman manipulation of religious time and festivals. The Kebra Nagast tells the story of the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon, claiming that Ethiopia became the guardian of the Ark of the Covenant and the Davidic lineage.
Other books, like the Apocalypse of Peter, provide graphic visions of final judgment, emphasizing personal repentance over church mediation. The Shepherd of Hermas teaches that forgiveness is possible even after baptism, challenging the authority of priests and sacraments.
Ethiopian tradition also preserves the true role of Mary—not just as a passive mother, but as a prophetess and spiritual leader, along with stories of other powerful women like Judith, Deborah, and Esther.

Why were these texts removed? Because they questioned institutional control, patriarchal authority, and the monopoly of church hierarchy. Ethiopia refused to censor them, believing that God’s truth should not be filtered or manipulated.
Today, as ancient manuscripts are rediscovered and digitized, many seekers are awakening to the realization that the version of Christianity handed down through Western tradition is incomplete.
The Ethiopian Bible, preserved for 1,700 years in a nation never fully conquered, offers the “complete story”—a faith rooted in diversity, spiritual experience, and direct connection to the divine.
In a time of global spiritual awakening, the Ethiopian Bible stands as a testament to the original teachings of Jesus and the apostles, preserved against all odds. Its 81 books invite believers to rediscover the fullness of faith, challenging them to seek truth beyond institutional boundaries and embrace a more profound spiritual journey.
