Phylicia Rashad at 77: A Life of Triumphs and Challenges
At 77, Phylicia Rashad, widely known as “America’s Mom” for her role as Clair Huxtable on *The Cosby Show*, has lived a life filled with both triumphs and challenges. From troubled marriages to controversial public statements, Rashad’s journey has been anything but ordinary.
Rashad’s personal life has seen its share of heartbreak. Her first husband, William Lancelot Bowles Jr., reportedly undermined her confidence by calling her “second string.” They divorced in 1975 after three years of marriage.

Her second husband, Victor Willis, the original lead singer of the Village People, battled drug addiction and faced rumors of infidelity, leading to their divorce in 1982.
Rashad’s third marriage to sports broadcaster Ahmad Rashad seemed promising, with a romantic proposal aired live during a Thanksgiving football game. However, after 16 years and rumors of cheating, they divorced in 2001. Despite the pain, Rashad has said she views her marriages not as failures but as lessons that helped her grow.
Rashad’s early life was shaped by her mother’s bold decision to move the family to Mexico to escape racial segregation in 1950s Texas. In Mexico, Rashad experienced a culture that appreciated her beauty and individuality, boosting her confidence as a young Black girl. This upbringing instilled resilience and a love for the arts, leading her to study theater at Howard University, where she graduated in 1970.

Her acting career began with theater roles, but it was her iconic portrayal of Clair Huxtable on *The Cosby Show* in 1984 that cemented her place in television history. Clair was a groundbreaking character—smart, elegant, and a loving mother—who became a role model for millions. Rashad’s performance showcased the strength and grace of Black women, redefining how they were portrayed on screen.
However, the legacy of *The Cosby Show* was later overshadowed by allegations against Bill Cosby. In 2014, Rashad defended Cosby, calling the accusations “the destruction of a legacy.” Her comments sparked backlash, with many accusing her of dismissing the experiences of the women who came forward.
When Cosby’s conviction was overturned in 2021, Rashad celebrated his release on social media, writing, “A terrible wrong is being righted.” The post drew criticism, particularly from students and staff at Howard University, where she serves as dean of the College of Fine Arts. Rashad later apologized, stating she supported survivors of abuse and did not intend to dismiss their pain.

Despite the controversies, Rashad’s career continues to thrive. She remains a respected figure in the arts and education, using her platform to inspire others. Her life story is one of resilience—rising above personal and professional challenges to leave an indelible mark on the entertainment industry.
Phylicia Rashad’s journey is a testament to the complexities of fame, legacy, and personal growth. Through heartbreak, controversy, and triumph, she has shown that strength comes from embracing life’s lessons and continuing to move forward.
